If you're traveling over the holidays, chances are you're not looking forward to spending time in a crowded, stressful airport. Faced with the prospect of long waits, deafening public-address systems, and indigestion, you may quickly lose that festive feeling.

O'Hare Airport in Chicago ranked third because 90 percent of its restaurants offer low-fat, fiber-rich, veggie-heavy meals.

Still, airports are not all bad. In fact, based on research Health magazine has done to find America's Healthiest airports, some are actually working hard to make your traveling experience healthier by offering nutritious food, special relaxation zones, walking paths, the latest safety technology, and a whole lot more. We scored the nation's major airports, see how we did it, and then asked a panel of expert judges (meet them here) to help us choose the top 10.

Congratulations to the winners. And to those airports that failed to make our list: Please shape up!

1. Phoenix Sky Harbor International

42 million passengers per year

Our top scorer won rave reviews for its commitment to a comfortable, low-stress experience for flyers. Sky Harbor's healthful dining options scored well on the annual Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine airport-food scale, which measures the percentage of eateries with healthy offerings at major airports. Tempting low-fat choices include Yoshi's Asian Grill's avocado-cucumber sushi and edamame, Roadhouse 66 Bar's veggie burgers, and Oaxaca's vegetable burrito.

"Burrito spots are great in airports because they often have several options that are healthy and fast," says judge Amy Lanou, Ph.D., a senior nutrition scientist for PCRM. Also elevating the Phoenix experience is a video-paging system that lists and announces names, making them accessible amid the usual din.

There are even two pet parks where traveling canines can work off energy before or after a flight. And the airport is always open to change: After a family with a disabled son suggested upgrades, the airport recently added adult changing stations to its family bathrooms. Plus, the airport's bathrooms are widely known as some of the nation's cleanest.

2. Baltimore/Washington International

21 million passengers per year

Baltimore/Washington International now features soft music and comfortable lighting at one of its key security checkpoints, instead of the usual crowding and confusion. The changes are part of the Transportation Security Administration's new Checkpoint Evolution program designed to reduce stress and hike safety.

"High-stress areas are the perfect camouflage for bad guys," says TSA spokesperson Christopher White. To take stress down another notch, walk the BWI Airport Trail, a 12.5-mile hiking-and-biking path that circles the airport and goes through wetlands and forest areas; it's accessible from public areas of the terminal. Still stressed? Get a seated massage at the Destination Relaxation spa.Health.com: America's healthiest spas

3. O'Hare International (Chicago)

76 million passengers per year

Big airports usually have a great selection of healthy food, Lanou says. That's one reason why O'Hare International, the second-busiest airport in the world, is in PCRM's top 10. More than 90 percent of its 100 restaurants offer low-fat, fiber-rich, veggie-heavy meals. CIBO Express, for instance, has grilled veggie salads and kosher crackers and chips. O'Hare also wins points for its super-fun children's play areas and the fitness facility in its on-site Hilton Hotel, which offers workout equipment plus massages, a sauna, a lap pool, showers, and a Jacuzzi. Day passes are $15.

4. Detroit Metropolitan

36 million passengers per year

A white Christmas is wonderful -- except when it ruins your travel plans or makes them unsafe. Detroit Metro is working hard to limit the risks. The National Weather Service recently recognized the airport as the nation's first "StormReady airport system."

Airport police officers, firefighters, and field-maintenance and security personnel are being trained as weather spotters; if they're aware of approaching storms, they alert airline employees (who consider boarding delays), disseminate information to keep ticket-holders from being stuck at gates without knowing why, and develop evacuation and sheltering plans. And should the weather delay you in Detroit (always a possibility during the winter), finding a healthy meal is easy. The airport partners with local health organizations to flag heart-healthy dishes on restaurant menus. Sushi, anyone?Health.com: America's healthiest restaurants

5. Denver International

50 million passengers per year

The largest airport in the United States can also boast about its energy efficiency. Acres of solar panels provide enough electricity to run half the airport's train system. The green electricity dramatically reduces carbon emissions -- equal to the impact of 255,000 gallons of gasoline (enough to power 500 cars for a year). The airport also has a recycling system built into the runways and taxiways to collect 70 percent of the glycol used to de-ice aircraft.

"You've got to tip your hat to Denver International for establishing themselves as a model," says judge Steve Howards, executive director of the Clean Airport Partnership, a nonprofit group devoted to improving environmental quality and energy efficiency at airports. Denver also receives high marks for its close-to-75-percent on-time arrival and departure rates, the second-largest public art collection in Colorado, free Wi-Fi, and healthy restaurant choices.Health.com: America's healthiest grocery stores

6. Washington National

19 million passengers per year

Anything that helps you take your mind off the fact that you're in an airport waiting to be crammed into a tiny airplane seat is a good thing. The museum-quality artwork at Ronald Reagan Washington National is the perfect diversion. Architect Cesar Pelli integrated 30 works -- stained glass, marble and glass mosaics, terrazzo, cast bronze, hammered aluminum and copper, and traditional paint on board and canvas -- into terminals B and C. If your flight's got a major delay, you can even get some fresh (fume-free) air at this airport: Try the walking-and-biking trail that goes through the airport grounds; flyers can access it by exiting terminal C. Our judge Tom Parsons, CEO and founder of BestFares.com, also gives Washington National props for being one of the easiest airports to get around in because of its one big terminal.

7. Dallas/Fort Worth International

60 million passengers per year

There's no better place for a family layover than Dallas/Fort Worth International (DFW), which has two 600-square-foot play areas that feature padded airplanes, taxis, and luggage for climbing, plus a TV showing kids' cartoons. DFW also scores high for its green fleet. Of the airport's 580 vehicles, from buses to lawn mowers, 540 are hybrids or run on compressed natural gas. And thanks to restaurants like Tequilerias, which serves nutritious options such as jicama and mango salads, the airport stands tall in PCRM's food rankings.

8. Logan International (Boston)

If you're a green fanatic, you'll love this: Logan's terminal A, its biggest, is the world's first airport terminal certified by the U.S. Green Building Council for using the highest green construction standards. It features roofing that reflects heat, special stormwater-filtration devices, low-flow faucets, waterless urinals, self-dimming lights, recycled construction materials, and more. And Logan's compressed-natural-gas shuttle buses prevent 7 tons of pollution emissions from reaching the atmosphere and causing smog every year, the equivalent of taking nearly 800 cars off the road. You care more about comfort than the environment? Logan pampers all weary travelers with 50 wooden rocking chairs, 16 decorated by local artists.

9. Portland International (Oregon)

15 million passengers per year

You'd expect an airport in the crunchy Northwest to go all-out for the environment. Portland doesn't disappoint with a paved bicycle-and-walking path that links local hotels, businesses, and regional hiking and biking trails to the airport. The airport offers free covered bicycle parking adjacent to the terminal, too. Our judges also laud Portland's recycling of cooking oil into biodiesel fuel, the abundance of live trees in the terminals, and the musicians -- mostly local stationed throughout the airport to lower the stress level.

"Loudspeaker noise on top of ambient noise is really hard on your senses," Lanou says. "The whole traveling experience is a lot easier when you know you don't have to listen to just PA-system announcements." Not surprisingly, Portland's Laurelwood brew pub offers certified-organic beers. And the airport gets high marks for on-time departures: 80-plus percent in the latest Transportation Department annual reporting period.

10. Philadelphia International

32 million passengers per year

If you get sick at the airport, what do you do? In Philadelphia you can head straight to the new AeroClinic, where nurse practitioners and physician assistants can diagnose and treat minor conditions like colds, allergies, and flu. The facility also offers well-care checks for people who have high blood pressure, cholesterol, thyroid problems, and diabetes.

If you're feeling fine, get a dose of heart-healthy wine at Vino Volo, the airport's new wine-tasting bar. And if you're traveling on a Saturday or Sunday, bring your laptop because Philly International features free

Wi-Fi weekends to help you keep your mind off the stresses to come.

New Report "how Airports Go Green" Added In Visionshopsters

Author: Visionshopsters

Airports have always had to comply with certain environmental regulations arising out of their operations, as local governments require impact studies on new construction projects and soundproofing nearby homes. Landings and takeoffs, as well as the diesel shuttles that circle the terminal roads, leave thousands of tons of toxic emissions in a compact area of the city. And for years, many airports have been slow to adopt measures that go beyond the minimum requirements.

U.S. airlines emitted about 418 billion pounds of carbon dioxide in 2007, according to the Air Transport Association, the airline industry trade group.

Airports have been spending hundreds of millions in terminal facilities that are esthetically pleasing but are not configured to conserve energy. Because of the perilous situation in airlines, airports call for quick return on investment funds. Occasionally the return on investment on these (environmental) projects is not adequate enough for the airport.

However, similar to many other industries, airports are fast adopting the green zeitgeist,
led partly by better social consciousness and ameliorating engineering science, and made
more pressing by ascending fuel costs.

This report covers the various concepts employed by airports in today’s age to go “green.” The report takes a look at this new trend through case studies.

The Day Reagan Dropped In

Author: Robert L. Mills

By  Robert L. Mills

I was a television script writer for Bob Hope for seventeen years during the 1970s and 1980s  and was witness to many exciting and unbelievable events during my years on the road with him.   This is just one of them.

In May 1987, Hope's production crew was airlifted from Van Nuys Airport to Pope Air Force Base in Fayetteville, North Carolina aboard the personal plane of Gen. Dwayne Cassidy, the chief of the Air Force's Military Airlift Command.  There we would tape a 90-minute special celebrating both Hope's eighty-fifth birthday and the seventy-fifth anniversary of the outfit that had transported him from base-to-base during his overseas Christmas tours during
World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

Also on board sharing the general's special VIP quarters that included a kitchen (complete with chef ) were Bob's wife, Dolores;  Lucille Ball (who would guest on the show), her husband Gary Morton, and the Hopes' toy poodle, "Toby." The pampered pooch was seldom left at home whenever they traveled together and, since Hope believed that neutering constituted cruel-and-unusual punishment, the catered-to canine had left his distinctive scent on some of the most expensive hotel suite curtains in the world — including his favorites in New York's posh Waldorf Towers.

Hope would meet us at Pope after flying in from a personal-appearance tour on the eastern seaboard. Our guest stars, Glen Campbell, Barbara Mandrell, Don Johnson, Emanuel Lewis, Brooke Shields and Phylicia Rashad, were waiting to go to work. Over the next several days, we rehearsed the show that would be taped before a crowd of four thousand servicemen and their families — as well as soldiers from nearby Ft. Bragg.

The monologue would be taped with the latest military hardware in the background to remind the viewers at home just how the Defense Department was spending their taxes — payback for their picking-up a substantial portion of the production costs.

The logistics of staging a show like this were complicated, but things had progressed smoothly and tape was ready to roll.  That morning, Hope had read in the local paper that Ronald Reagan was flying back to Washington after delivering the commencement address at the University of Georgia.  He said to our producer, James Lipton (who now hosts "Inside the Actor's Studio" on Bravo), "Call the White House. Maybe we can get Ronnie to pop over and appear on our show."  Jim gulped hard.  "Nice idea, but, gee, Bob, every segment is locked in and we start seating the audience in two hours."  Hope was not deterred. "We can always find an extra five minutes somewhere. Call."

Hope was well aware of the impact a presidential visit would have on Pope and the infantry outfits. Lipton called the personal number that Hope gave him and was soon patched through to Air Force One, already airborne. The call was switched to the Winnebago in the main hanger that had been provided for Hope a s a dressing room. As fellow writer Gene Perret and I sat on the fold-down couch across from him, the following conversation took place:

"Ron? Bob. Hey, we're doing a little birthday thing here at Pope Air Force Base and — Pope — it's in North Carolina. We thought you might take a quick left turn and drop in. Be great, you know. I'll have the boys bang out something we can do together.  The whole thing shouldn't takemore than a half hour, tops."

There was a long pause as Hope listened to the most powerful leader in the free-world confer with his aides. Then he covered the receiver with his hand and mouthed the words: "He'll do it."

Like the comedy relief pitchers we were trained to be, Gene and I sprung into action. While Air Force One winged toward Pope, we'd bang out a page of dialogue for the two old veterans of the silver screen. After Hope okayed it, we'd call Reagan back so his secretary could type it up for him to memorize.

While Gene and I tapped away, the Secret Service was conferring with Lipton and the show's co-producer Elliott Kozak. Reagan's Boeing 707 would land and taxi directly to the stage.  Within an hour, scores of agents descended on the area like a swarm of armed locusts in dark suits. Some of the same German shepherds that had "sanitized" Grand Rapids six years earlier (for our special opening the Gerald R. Ford Museum) sniffed their way through our production equipment.

Metal detectors suddenly sprouted up everywhere to ensure that there would be no gate crashers. We were all instructed that once the president's plane touched down, we weren't to wander from our assigned areas under threat of sudden death by Uzi.

Here's how it all worked back then. On any major flight, Air Force One was accompanied by an identical "decoy" plane carrying several hundred uniformed and plainclothes agents. Additionally, an unmarked C-130 troop carrier containing the armored presidential limo and specially armed escort vehicles completed the flotilla.  As soon as the decision to detour to Pope had been made, these escort planes flew ahead to complete the last minute security arrangements which, in this case, must have been nervewracking.  Reagan had already been the target of a would-be assassin, and they weren't looking for a sequel.

As expected, the audience, having no inkling of the unscheduled stopover, literally erupted when the Gipper strode down that boarding ramp. He greeted Hope warmly, and the two old troupers did their one minute exchange. Total elapsed time from touchdown to departure was exactly thirty minutes as promised. Exciting stuff to be sure, all made possible because Hope could dial a president's number and know there would be one at the other end of the line.

Travel Advice - Airport Codes

Author: Yue

It’s nice to see things well organized and tracked. Ever wonder what those 3 character codes you see at the airport monitor screen, e-ticket information, airline or travel agency website? Here’s a travel tip.

That 3 character code is called the IATA – Location identifier or airport code. These codes are the best identifiers to help you determine where the airport you’ll be leaving is located. This comes handy if there is more than 1 airport in your area. If you just go by the name of the city airport there might be a tendency you’ll get lost or confused with one or the other. It’s best to tell a travel agent what airport code you’ll be leaving from, it saves half the time when booking/exchanging a flight.

A classic scenario would be when a customer checks the itinerary confirmation and leaves for the airport following the area name like Washington DC as printed in the itinerary yet not knowing he went to Washington Reagan (DCA) instead of Washington Dulles (IAD).

To avoid situations like these, my all time travel tip would be to call the airline and confirm the reservation at least 24 hours prior to travel date. All travel itineraries has the airport code printed.

Here’s a list of the major airport codes in the US:

Atlanta (ATL) – Hartsfield International Airport

Boston (BOS) – Boston Logan International Airport

Chicago (ORD) – O’Hare International Airport

Chicago (MDW) – Midway

Dallas (DFW) – Dallas Fort Worth International Airport

Dallas (DAL) – Dallas Love Field

Detroit (DTW) – Detroit Metro Airport

Houston (IAH) – George Bush Intercontinental Airport

Houston (HOU) – Houston Hobby

Los Angeles (LAX) - Los Angeles International Airport

New York (JFK) – John F. Kennedy International Airport

New York (LGA) – La Guardia Airport

New York (EWR) – Newark Liberty Airport

San Francisco (SFO) - San Francisco International Airport

Washington DC (DCA) – Ronald Reagan Airport

Washington DC (IAD) – Dulles International Airport

BWI Parking - Some Surprisingly Cheap Long Term Parking Options

Author: Emmanuel Gonot

BWI parking accommodations,  by far, is one of the best from among the numerous airports of similar size, that we've seen throughout the country. This is hardly surprising, considering that in 2010, Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) was ranked by the Airports Council International  as the best airport of its size (15 - 25 million passengers served in one year) in the world.

If you're flying out of BWI Marshall and looking for a good BWI parking location, you definitely should consider staying at one of the airport's own parking facilities. We're getting ahead of ourselves here, let's look closely at the different BWI airport parking options available.

Hourly Parking

The BWI hourly parking rate is relatively lower at $4 per hour (maximum $22 per day) compared to those in Dulles or Philadelphia International, for example. For that price, it's also the most convenient, located right in front of the main airport terminal. Still, if you're looking at parking beyond 2 hours, this is not a cheap option.

Daily Rates

Again, the BWI parking rate for daily parking ($12 per day) is lower than in other nearby airports such as Washington Reagan  ($20 per day). If you're traveling for a few days, staying at the BWI indoor daily parking garage is a good option.

Express Parking

The rate for express parking at BWI, at $10 per day, is slightly less than their daily parking rate. I guess it's because the express outdoor parking lot is situated a little bit farther than the daily parking garage. In my opinion, though, this service where an express shuttle picks you up directly where you park your vehicle and takes you to the terminal, picks you up at the terminal when you come back and takes you directly to your vehicle, is a winner.

Long Term Parking

If you're looking at a business or vacation trip for 7 days or more and trying to find a parking location that will not burn a hole in your pocket when you come back, the long term BWI airport parking option is the way to go. The rate is only $8 per day and the lots are serviced by closely-scheduled shuttle buses.

Off-airport Parking

There are numerous off-airport private garages and lots available to BWI passengers, like the EconoPark Express on Ridge Road and the Park ‘N Fly lot along Camp Meade Road. These locations offer long term parking rates ranging from $9 to $10 per day and are served by their own shuttle vehicles. These are often run by large companies operating dozens of other similar facilities throughout the country, they're a good option for long term parking.

So, why am I recommending the airport-owned BWI parking? The obvious answer, of course, is in the rates. It's cheaper to park at BWI airport's own long term parking lots than at any off-airport location - something that's unheard of in most other large airports. BWI provides extra things like car keys assistance, jump cables for dead batteries, flat tire assistance, sensors in every parking bay - which all adds tremendous value to their parking service.

Looking for the ideal BWI parking? Now, you know where the best ones are.
